Formulas
Some say that dimension formulas are not a good idea. I say that if they are not a good idea then they should not be allowed. They are in my view, used correctly and for proper purposes one of the key elements of decision support systems. Historically, substantial systems had vast capability in this area. BPC should eventually be no different.
In this case, the business thinker will see that the flow dimension for F_IRED can carry a formula that relates the total inventory available for sale to the ending inventory to create a ratio for calculating the amount of Profit In Inventory left over in the remaining inventory balance.
Figure 15. An Example Dimension Formula for the Inventory Adjustment
Likewise, a formula can be developed for F_COGR to calculate the cost of goods sold reduction for the period for the Profit In Inventory that was “sold”.
We have implemented those formulas here. We can discuss this concept with you. Your formulas and dimension structure SHOULD be different than this generic example. But this is not enough!
